My father in law took a few pictures at his family’s farm. This is my favorite.

I grew up in a NYC suburb, then college in new Orleans. When I went to Indiana for grad school I was amazed by farming.

If you went back you’d be amazed all over again by how big the equipment has gotten. Don’t look up prices without a defibrillator handy either.

I love watching combines harvesting sorghum. The new machines, with GPS guidance systems and air conditioning and all that, are pretty fucking cool.

They don’t use GPS, but the thing is amazing. I run grain trailers back and forth to the elevator for them in the fall, and it’s amazing how quick we’re turning them around just to keep up with it.

The ones on the farm I work at use GPS. not for automation like many people think though, more as a guide to spend the least amount of time getting the job done

The farming aspect of Indiana I’m going to miss when I move to Florida. The machinery fascinates me. The farm I work at has a relatively small John Deere(6000 series) and its price tag is north of $120k. They got what I hear is a screaming deal on one of the combines, only $375k.

Have you seen the fully autonomous one that New Holland is working on? That that is amazing. On the air conditions front on the farm I work at our JD has the best air con of any vehicle there. Downside is that if it goes out(know this due to a coworker’s dad) is that if it goes out it is around $5000 to fix.

I wish the crop guys at the farm I work at would keep the insides of their combines that neat. I keep our truck and tractors cleaned out and spend less time in them.

What a fascinating machine, great picture!

They considered GPS mapping and will probably do it once the uncle that currently runs the combine decides to retire. He’s about to turn 82 and plans to keep doing things his way as long as he can.

Yeah, a decent amount of time is put into keeping everything clean. They even keep bags for trash in all the equipment. When the soy beans are being harvested a lot of time is spent blowing off all the dust with a leaf blower.

It’s pricey to start but usually pays for itself in the long run.

Ours constantly wash the outside but the inside looks like a fat long haul trucker’s windshield.
